Starting on June 1, 2026, the Regional Government of Madeira introduced a new fee applicable to all car rental contracts on the island.
This fee is mandatory and applies to all rent a car companies operating in Madeira.
How Much Is the Fee?
€2 per day for petrol or diesel vehicles
€1 per day for electric or zero-emission vehicles
The fee must legally appear on the rental contract and invoice.
Maximum Charge Per Rental
The new fee is limited to a maximum of 10 charged days per contract.
Examples:
3-day rental → charged for 3 days
7-day rental → charged for 7 days
14-day rental → charged only for 10 days
30-day rental → maximum limit still applies
Maximum total amounts:
€20 maximum for combustion vehicles
€10 maximum for electric vehicles

Some companies may only add this fee during pickup or separate it from the advertised online price.
