The drive from Madeira Airport to Funchal is approximately 20 km (12 miles) and usually takes around 20 to 25 minutes, depending on traffic.
It’s one of the easiest drives you’ll make during your holiday, with most of the journey taking place on the Via Rápida.
As you approach Funchal, traffic naturally becomes a little busier, especially during weekday mornings and late afternoons.
Simply follow your GPS carefully, stay in the correct lane and take your time.
Using GPS in Madeira
Navigation apps work extremely well across the island, Google Maps, Apple Maps and Waze are all reliable and regularly used by both locals and tourists.
For extra peace of mind, consider downloading an offline map before you travel, particularly if you’re planning to explore remote areas such as the north coast or mountain viewpoints.

Fuel stations are easy to find, especially around Funchal, Santa Cruz, Machico and other larger towns, most stations accept international debit and credit cards, while many are self-service.
